Reviving Our Coasts: Mangrove Planting Initiative by iCommunity Lanka

At iCommunity Lanka, our commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment drives every project we undertake. Recently, we proudly completed a ground-breaking mangrove restoration initiative with Turtle Conservation Project, Sri Lanka. This ambitious effort saw the planting of 450,000 mangrove saplings across 100 hectares of vulnerable coastal land in the Batticaloa District, ensuring a greener and more resilient future.

Project Highlights

  • Community-Centric Approach: Local communities were at the heart of this initiative. Over 85% of the project funds directly supported community members who cared for and maintained the mangroves, creating jobs and fostering stewardship.
  • Scientific Precision: Guided by the Sri Lanka Turtle Conservation Project (SLTCP), we ensured that only mature saplings of approved mangrove species were planted. Strict spacing guidelines and fencing mechanisms were implemented to optimize growth and protection.
  • Capacity Building: Regular awareness programs, GIS mapping assistance, and collaboration with research teams helped participants understand the ecological and economic value of their efforts.
  • Sustainability: Maintenance for the first year, gap-filling for damaged saplings, and detailed monitoring ensured that the mangroves not only survived but thrived.

Community and Collaboration

Our collaboration with local societies was pivotal. They worked tirelessly to ensure the project’s success, following rigorous guidelines and providing weekly updates to the SLTCP. Together, we demonstrated the power of community action in achieving large-scale environmental goals.
